Background
ICNC's mission is "to strengthen companies in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor and to facilitate economic and community development."
Since 1967, when a small group of business owners came together to address crime and inadequate garbage pick-up on the Near West side, ICNC has worked to connect hundreds of company owners and pave the way for a thriving business community in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor. Initiatives which have benefited the local business community include:
- Planned Manufacturing District - created in 1998 to ensure that industry in the Kinzie Corridor is never crowded out by residential development.
- Tax Increment Financing (TIF) - designated in 1998, the fund provides millions of dollars for infrastructure improvements and training to Kinzie Corridor companies and projects which benefit the community.
- Fulton-Carroll Center (FCC) - granted to ICNC in 1980 and to KIDC (partnering 501(c)(3) organization ) in 1984 from the Department of Commerce, ICNC's 410,000 square-foot small business incubator houses over 120 tenants and provides no-cost business development services and resources. In 2006, FCC was recognized internationally with the "Incubator of the Year" award (NBIA).
- Kinzie Industrial Development Corporation or KIDC - formed in 1984 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) partner to ICNC, KIDC shares ICNC's mission of enhancing economic and community development focused on providing economic development assistance to the larger Near West side community.
Today, ICNC is comprised of over 400 member companies and represents the Kinzie Corridor's rapidly growing business community, comprised of over 2,000 small businesses. Increased funding and a growing membership base have allowed ICNC to continue to expand its services and impact.
