Barista
Sputnik Coffee is a rapidly growing coffee roastery and cafe based in Chicago, IL. We are here to make craft coffee more affordable and accessible to everyone. A Day in the Life of a Barista includes a mix of preparing coffee drinks, customer service, hands-on production, cleaning and organizing. For this role, we’re looking for a motivated, high-energy candidate, who enjoys being in front of customers and making everyone feel welcome. No previous cafe or barista experience is required. As we are a small business, the Barista may need to help out and assist in the warehouse.

Functional Description
At Sputnik, we do things differently. We’re looking for a new team member who is hard working, flexible and energized by being part of the process of making delicious coffee drinks for our awesome customers.
The Barista’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
● Open cafe in the mornings and ensure cafe is ready to go by 6:30am
● Greet every customer and make them feel welcome
● Adapt, be flexible and kind if a customer is unhappy with their experience
● Learn to demonstrate knowledge of coffee, tea and everything on the menu (No experience necessary- we will teach you)
● Take orders, serve coffee and make espresso drinks during the morning rush (No experience necessary- we will teach you)
● Restock supplies and take inventory
● Keep everything super clean. Clean counters, equipment, bathroom, and floors.
● May needs to assist in weekly production
○ Package retail coffee into cases
○ Move cases around the shop
● Clean cafe, organize and ensure everything is in place for the upcoming morning
● Work with team to create and promote new drinks and menu offerings
Necessary Availability:
Monday - Saturday 6:00 am - 4:00 pm

Minimum availability 25-30 hours per week
Pay: $18.75 per hour plus tips
The ideal candidate will be effective in managing their time and prioritizing responsibilities.
They will be expected to complete assigned tasks independently and be flexible as issues arise. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with people and serving delicious drinks to the local community.
Qualifications/Requirements
● No cafe or barista experience is necessary
● Availability to work a total of 5 days per week, including weekends
● Available to start workday at 6:00 am
● 1 year commitment
● Food Safety Manager Certification course completion will be required one week after hiring
● Willingness to learn how to make excellent drinks using an espresso machine and other tools of the trade
● Adhere to all food safety and sanitation guidelines
● Report any kitchen equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to management
● Ability to wear protective clothing and equipment such as safety shoes, face mask, a hair/beard net, and gloves when required
● Ability to work with allergens that might be present in a food environment. (specifically, tree nuts)
● Ability to wear uniform Preferred Experience & Characteristics
