Director of Development
ICNC and its sister agency, KIDC, are nonprofit organizations working to strengthen businesses in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor and to facilitate economic and community development. ICNC represents nearly 400 member companies and owns and operates the Fulton-Carroll Center (FCC) business incubator, which houses 110 small business tenants.
Summary
The Director of Development will lead all individual and major gifts efforts of the organization including annual fund activities as well as develop, grow and manage a corporate gifts program that focuses on increasing the number of new donors to ICNC, generating multi-year commitments, and increasing overall unrestricted funding. The Director of Development, along with the Executive Director, sets the organization’s strategic fundraising agenda to achieve and exceed its revenue goals through the solicitation of individual and major gifts, corporate and foundation support, special events and institutional grants.
It is important that the candidate be able to interact with and engage a diverse donor base. The candidate should have experience with fund development and annual giving principles and strategies including direct mail, phone solicitations, special events, key campaigns such as capital and challenge grants, and appropriate stewardship. This position reports to the Executive Director and supervises no staff.
Responsibilities
Fundraising:
• Develop, implement and evaluate ICNC’s annual fundraising plan that incorporates individual and major gifts, corporate, foundation and institutional donors;
• Build a planned giving program;
• Develop and implement systems and processes for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors;
• Solicit donors via face-to-face meetings, written proposals, etc.;
• Expand relationships with external constituents and key sectors including individual donors, foundations, businesses and corporations, the media, elected officials, government entities, associations and other organizations and community groups.
Prospecting:
• Identify prospective donors in particular individuals, corporations and foundations;
• Together with the Executive Director, develop, maintain and evaluate an active prospect portfolio of new and major gift donors to include individuals, corporations and foundations;
• Make face to face visits;
• Submit contact reports for each visit/call;
• Follow-up on visits/solicitations as appropriate.
Communications and Administrative:
• Contribute to the creation of an annual communications and outreach plan;
• Write/prepare donor solicitations and campaign materials, and correspondence related to development activities;
• Support organizational communications and information activities including producing newsletters, annual report, brochures, press releases and informational materials;
• Develop and manage departmental budget;
• Maintain and improve donor database and systems to: a) track contributions by project, by donor and by solicitation source; b) produce timely donor acknowledgements; and c) create reports as appropriate;
• Develops policies and procedures in line with fundraising best practices;
• Conduct yearly review and assessment of full portfolio, including annual giving, making adjustments as necessary.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in related field (non-profit management, communications, marketing, public relations,);
• At least a three year proven track record in sales and/or individual donor solicitations and is comfortable making cold calls and setting up appointments;
• High energy, outgoing, and a passion for ICNC’s mission is essential;
• Sense of humor
• Able to maintain strong, positive, collegial working relationships with staff, board, and outside consultants and professional service providers;
• Willing to travel and use personal vehicle as necessary in the performance of work-related activities – travel and mileage expenses will be reimbursed;
• Very results driven and steadfastly pushes self and others for results;
• Excellent time management and strong organizational skills;
• Access to the Internet/email when not in the office;
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships;
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet established goals and deadlines;
• Relates well to all types of people; builds appropriate rapport; listens; builds constructive and effective relationships;
• Effective in a variety of formal presentation settings, one-on-one, small and large groups with peers, subordinates and supervisors.
Working Conditions
Open office environment, but much time to be spent in face-to-face contact with donors, involving substantial local travel.
Benefits of the Position
This is a full-time position;
Starting salary range $50,000 to $60,000. Starting salary commensurate with experience;
