Farmer's Market Intern - Chicago, IL
The Logan Square Chamber of Commerce operates the Logan Square Farmers Market (“the Market”) as a tool for economic and community development and neighborhood promotion. While it is a community Market, it is nationally known and well respected. At the height of the summer season, 70 or more vendors may be selling at the Market, which is open to the public outdoors every Sunday, rain or shine, from mid-May through October, and indoors, November through March. In April and early May while the Market is closed, promotional and administrative activities are carried on in preparation for the season to follow.
The Farmers Market Intern (FMI) position is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of local food systems in Chicago. The FMI reports to directly to the Market Manager (MM) who is under the direction of the Executive Director of the Chamber. The position can be catered and flexible to suit the student’s interests including, but not limited to: environment/sustainability, community outreach, communications, public policy/urban planning, and marketing.

Farmers Market Intern is a part time position, requiring about 10 hours per week, typically 8:30 AM – 4 PM on Sundays, in addition to varied hours during the week. The FMI is expected to stay onsite at the market until all required activities are complete. The FMI is expected to exercise initiative in carrying out required duties. A possible stipend may be available.

- Assisting in set up and take down of the market
- Overseeing the waste recycling and composting program, ensuring vendors are in compliance
- Processing debit/credit and SNAP/EBT
- Assisting with outreach and marketing of the market for SNAP & Senior/WIC incentives o Distributing flyers around neighborhoods, local businesses, WIC centers
- Assisting with social media and digital communications, including:
- Day of social media promotion on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook o Creative writing on newsletter, weekly market recipe, farmer/vendor profiles for future LSFM cookbook
- Additional tasks as needed throughout the shift.
Requirements:
- Have strong oral and written communication skills
- Have the ability to lift at least 25 pounds
- Have a strong interest in local/sustainable food systems
- Be willing and prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
