Part-Time Lab Technician - Chicago, IL
Boutique food product development lab producing confectionery and related items founder needs a Part-time Lab technician. Great position for a student in the STEM field.
Shift:
Mon-Thurs. With flexible hours totaling 20 hours a week.
Rate of Pay:
$15 an hour
Location:
Damen and Fulton - On the job training will be provided for the right candidate.
Responsibilities:
Prep for tests:
Weighing out and preparing quantities of ingredients needed. Gathering and setting up equipment, making mold shapes, starch boards. Simple analytical tests – pH, water activity, weigh data.
Assisting with tests:
Create blends based upon work orders and instructions and direction provided by Food Scientist. Depositing, removing product from molds, oiling, sanding. Making simple recipes ex. standard gummy recipes baked goods. Occasionally taste testing products that may include major allergens
After the Test:
Gathering paperwork and packaging for shipping samples. Preparing and labeling samples. Keeping our ingredients, measurement tools, analytical supplies, etc. organized. Responsible for making sure the sample, equipment, and any required chemicals are handled correctly.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Sanitize the surfaces and the equipment, both before and after it is used. Inventory, store, transfer, recycle or dispose of waste chemicals. Maintain a safe, sterile laboratory environment.

Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be extremely organized with the ability to work in a quick, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Able to measure weight accurately on a scale and record results.
- Able to learn new techniques quickly and apply them.
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Able to read and follow recipes, often with minimal but crucial differences.
- Must be able to climb stairs carrying 25 lbs.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work standing/cleaning/mopping/doing dishes.
- Must have Servsafe Food Handler License or ability to obtain license within 2 weeks of starting work.
- Must be able to legally work in the United States.
- Must have verifiable proof of being fully vaccinated including boosters or wiliness to submit to a weekly Covid test at the employee’s expense. If testing weekly, employee must show verifiable proof of a negative Covid test before the start of their next scheduled shift.
- Experience working with lab equipment, in a bakery or in food production a plus.
